The Sound of Music by Vermont Children's Theater

July 28, 2012  |   2:00 PM

The Sound of Music
Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse
Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp

Story summary:
When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theater. The Sound of Music is presented through special arrangement with R & H Theatricals: www.rnh.com

The Vermont Children's Theater provides the children in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont with a practical introduction to theatre, developing theatrical technique, self-confidence and personal responsibility regardless of their ability to pay. Each summer, local children perform three musicals, starting with the youngest group in early July, and culminating with the high school actors in a Broadway musical in late July. Advanced tickets are available through Catamount Arts (www.catamountarts.org).

The theater is located in a converted barn on Darling Hill, with a gorgeous view of Willoughby Gap. To reach the theater from downtown Lyndonville, go north on US Route 5, turn right on VT Route 114, and then left on Darling Hill Road. The theater is on the left, about 2 miles from VT Route 114, just past the Wildflower Inn.
