Stepping Out

Tickets: $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and students.Every Thursday, in a dusty church basement, a well-intentioned but not overly talented group of Londoners meet for tap class—all brought together out of the desire to dance as if no one is watching, and, hopefully, no one ever will!

That is, until they’re invited to perform for charity. As disbelief is replaced by sheer terror, can this bunch of amateurs pull together and put on the performance of a lifetime? Well, sometimes—and perhaps more often than you suspect—you can be the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong colleagues all trying to accomplish something entirely out of your range and, just for a fleeting moment, find glory in coming together to try.

Romeo and Juliet Bolshoi Ballet
7:00 PM

Tickets: $18 Adults, $15 Members, $6 Students. Romeo and Juliet was Kenneth MacMillan’s first full-evening ballet, and, from its premiere in 1965, has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works, popular all over the world. At the beginning of the ballet MacMillan’s crowd scenes teem with life and colour. It’s a pleasure to be able to follow the characters created by members of the corps de ballet as they portray the townspeople, market traders and servants of the rival Montagues and Capulets. However, once Romeo and Juliet meet, everything else on stage can only be scenery for their story. Three great pas de deux: the meeting in the ballroom, the balcony scene and the morning after the wedding, eloquently convey the narrative: adolescent shyness and fascination; the headlong rush of love declared, and the grief of parting. The final scene in the tomb, a pas de deux with a lifeless partner, is devastating. The Royal Ballet has performed Romeo and Juliet well over 400 times, yet each performance is subtly different. Every pairing in the title roles brings fresh nuances to the young lovers’ characters, while the wealth of supporting roles, from the exuberant trio of harlots in the town square to the murderous rage of Tybalt, offers scope for dancers throughout the Company. Nicholas Georgiadis’s earthy Renaissance designs, with some of the original details recently restored, are the perfect backdrop.

Vermont Open Studios Weekend

Most Vermont craftspeople work in studios located in or close to their residences. These are places of production and inspiration located in downtowns as well as at the ends of dirt roads. Wherever their locations, they are exciting places to visit because they reflect the dynamic yet organized process that is used to produce the finished work of art.

The studio itself is enormously informative because you can see at a glance how the artist works. You see the swatches that have not been chosen for the quilt or the work that is experimental or not serious enough for the gallery. Buying or ordering work during an Open Studio sale is a unique experience because you have the opportunity to speak to the artist directly.

The Open Studio Weekend was named one of the Top Ten Summer Events in a competition sponsored by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce in 1997.
